Survival against all odds. This is Kian Richardson. A picture of health today, this little guy has made a miraculous journey since being born four months premature.

“Yeah he’s a pretty happy little lad, he gives us lots of smiles every morning, which is pretty cheerful, even though he keeps us up all night.”

But it was his entry into this world that shocked mother Tamara, and what gained him widespread attention back in March.

“I’d finally gone to the bathroom, looked down and Kian was there.”

Born into a toilet bowl, it’s hard to believe Kian weighed only the equivalent of two cans of soda. This doll, an exact replica of Kian at birth.

“695 grams, just 30 centimeters long, and his head was 21 centimeters in circumference.”

Kian now weighs a healthy four and a half kilos or just under ten pounds.

Dr Arvind Sehgal from Southern Health’s Monash Medical Center says statistics don’t reflect such positive outcomes like Kian’s.

“If you look at the local data at 23 weeks gestation which is where Kian was, it’s about 50% survival.”

Dr Sehgal also believes the parents’ unwavering commitment played a major role.

“So, certainly he’s been very strong, he’s made his own effort, his parents have been there, so together as a team if you believe in miracles, you could label it as one.”

After more than 200 days in hospital, Kian has just been released, his feeding tube removed but he still requires oxygen to aid breathing.

[Tamara Richardson, Kian’s Mother]:
“You just don’t realise these guys just have so much fight in them to get through what they have to go through.”

And for parents in similar circumstances, the Richardsons offer these words.
“Never give up hope, never give up hope.”

Kian, which means Warrior in Gaelic, has certainly lived up to his name.
