In every brigade’s factory, there was an inmate who was designated by the guards to supervise the labor.
While I was in the Third Brigade, the hot-tempered supervising inmate often scolded me and insulted me with venomous language in the factory, saying I was clumsy in labor and so on.
I quietly endured without fighting back, meanwhile kept searching my inner self for where I had fallen short and needed to be improved according to the principle of Truth-Compassion-Tolerance.
Then one day, she suddenly requested me to write some Chinese characters for her on the factory blackboard, saying she liked my handwriting very much.
When I finished writing, she said loudly to all the inmates in the factory in an earnest tone, instead of her usual ruffian-like tone, “This handwriting feels really pleasant to look at! I believe one’s handwriting reflects one’s character! From now on, whenever I’m in the verge of flying into a rage, I’ll look at this handwriting! Thereby I won’t fly into a rage! I want to become this kind of person too: Quietly endure, never fight with anyone, and win over people’s respect only by virtues and reason!”
The whole factory burst into loud laughter.
She never scolded me thereafter.
