The Philippines’ most active volcano spewed volumes of ash today as the volcanology agency recorded at least five minor explosions and warned people against inhaling the fumes.

Volcanologists have advised people in three cities and five towns at the base of the volcano to cover their noses and mouth with masks or wet cloth to keep from inhaling ash. Disaster officials have begun distributing tens of thousands of gas masks to residents.
