Taiwan’s President Ma Apologizes for “White Terror”

It’s now twenty-three years since the lifting of martial law in Taiwan, and President Ma Ying-jeou apologized to the people of Taiwan for the “White Terror” era.
台湾解除戒严令至今已23年，总统马英九对“白色恐怖”时期的民众道歉。
After the Chinese Nationalist Party lost the Chinese civil war to communist forces and fled to Taiwan in 1949, it started the longest period of martial law of any country in the world—over 38 years.
1949年，中国国民党在内战败给共产党并逃到台湾，开始了最长的38年戒严令，高于世界其它国家。
“White Terror” refers to the suppression of opponents of the Chinese Nationalist Party, especially the massacre of February 28, 1947—now known as the 228 incident.
“白色恐怖”指的是对反对中国国民党的人的镇压，尤其是1947年2月28日的大屠杀，即现在熟知的 228事件。
The Nationalist Government was trying to catch communist sympathizers and anyone else who would oppose their rule. During this period more than 140 thousand Taiwanese were imprisoned or executed according to the government’s own statistics. Many innocent people are thought to have been amongst them.

Last Friday (July 16th) outside the presidential palace, President Ma delivered his speech in the now democratic Taiwan. He apologized for what his party did in the past.
上周五（7月16日）在总统府外，马总统在现代民主化的台湾发表演说。他对自己政党过去的行为表示歉意。
[Ma Ying-jeou, Taiwan President]:
“As the government, and myself as a member of a political party, of course we should recognize that we have made mistakes and express our apology to the family members of those harmed in miscarriages of justice, fabricated legal cases and misguided legal cases.”

“身为政府及政党官员，我们当然应该承认过去犯的错误，且对因司法误判、捏造和误导法律案件，而受到伤害的家族成员致上歉意。”
Yet despite this recent apology, Taiwan’s opposition Democratic Progressive Party—or DPP—have been critical of Ma’s actions since his election in 2008.

DPP leader Tsai Ing-wen criticized Ma in 2009 for not apologizing for the tragedies that happened under Nationalist rule.

Yet now the people of Taiwan have finally received the apology they have sought. There have been reportedly more than 7000 cases of compensation by the government to the families of those who were killed during the “White Terror.”
