台北市长马英九华府智库演讲

大家好！台湾台北市长马英九访美行程空前成功，大家才注意原来小马哥不只是台湾的小马哥，同时也是包括中国大陆所有华人世界里的小马哥。小马哥旋风怎么说呢？Little Brother Ma Tornado。Think Tank是什么意思呢？可不是思想坦克喔，而是“智库”。但这回最让马英九开心的，不只是热情的马迷，而是会见了美国副国务卿。我们看以下这则新唐人英语新闻。

Taipei Mayor and Chinese Nationalist Party Chairman Ma Ying-Jeou was in Washington, DC Wednesday. It's the third stop in his tour of the U.S. He has already given speeches in New York City and Boston.
台北市长暨国民党主席马英九在结束纽约、波士顿行程后，于3月22日抵达华盛顿，并于当天下午在华府智库发表讲演。

Mayor Ma is favored to win the 2008 Taiwan President Election, so wherever he goes, he attracts a lot of attention. Let's go to our report about Ma Ying-jeou speaking at a Washington D.C. think tank.

STORY: Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou was at a luncheon hosted by American Enterprise Institute and Traditional Foundation. He was invited to give a speech on "Who decides Taiwan's future."
【讲解】A luncheon hosted by American Enterprise Institute and Traditional Foundation 美国企业研究所及传统基金会所主办的午餐会。”Host”
means to act as host at (an event) or for (a television or radio programme). Host名词就是主人，动词就是当东道主之意。

【译文】:
3月22日，台北市长马英九先生出席了美国企业研究所及传统基金会合办的午餐会，并应邀发表了专题演讲《谁将决定台湾的未来？》。

Chairman Ma stressed that the Chinese Communist Party's so called "One Country Two Systems" implemented in Hong Kong can not be accepted by Taiwan. "We elected our own President and Council. We want to manage our own business. We do not want One Country Two Systems. If the system is good, why not just One Country and One System?"
【讲解】
Stress=emphasize，强调之意。"One Country Two Systems" implemented in Hong Kong，在香港实行的一国两制。Implemented=carried out，实施，这里是分词片语，作为"One Country Two Systems"的后位修饰。

【译文】:
马英九先生在演讲中强调中共在香港实行的所谓一国两制不会被台湾所接受。“我们选举了自己的总统和议会，希望自己处理自己的事务，我们不要一国两制，如果制度很好的话，为何不一国一制呢？"

Mr. Ma thinks the biggest issue between Taiwan and Mainland is the lack of mutual recognition. But he thinks the cross-strait's different definition about One China may also become the foundation for negotiation.
【讲解】
“缺乏”有三种讲法，the lack of, the short of, the want of。mutual recognition，相互认同。

【译文】:
马英九先生认为台海双方目前最大的问题是彼此缺乏共识。不过他认为两岸对一个中国各自表述的立场也许可以成为协商的基础

But Taiwan's Nationalist Party believes in upholding the Republic of China. Mr. Ma hopes China and Taiwan can reach a mutual understanding, and establish a democratic, free and prosperous China.
【讲解】Uphold= confirm=support= maintain。
To reach a mutual understanding= to reach a consensus。

【译文】:
只是国民党对一个中国的解释是“中华民国”。马先生说目前两岸由两种不同的政府统治，希望有一天，我们能够达到共识，建立一个民主自由繁荣的中国。

Some audience asks him whether he is concerned about the possibility of being ruined by Taiwan's current president, Chen Shuibian. Chairman Ma says there isn't any hatred between them. Although on majority issues he disagrees with President Chen's approaches.
【讲解】Be ruined= be destroyed= be destructed。
Hatred (noun)= intense hate，强烈的憎恨。
“Approach”means a way of dealing with something. 处理事情的方事。

【译文】:
有听众问他担不担心在政治上会被陈水扁毁掉，马英九先生说，我们之间没有什么仇恨。虽然我大部份不同意陈水扁的做法，但是他作为中华民国的总统，我对他表示尊重。

After the meeting, Mr. Ma continued to answer some questions raised by some Chinese media in the resting room. In the middle, he also signed autographs for his fans, showing his always friendly style.
会后，马先生在休息室内继续回答了一些中文媒体的提问，匆忙之际仍为“马迷”签名，展现其一贯的亲民作风。

Because this is the first time Mr. Ma visited United States as the Nationalist Party Chairman. His trip received attentions from all walks of life. Everywhere Mr. Ma went, it is said it triggered the "Little Brother Ma Tornado".
