肩吾问前令尹孙叔敖道：“您三次当宰相也没有自负，三次离职也没有忧色。起初我并不相信，但现可信服了。看您悠然自适，究竟您心里是怎样想的？”

孙叔敖回答说：“我有什么过人的地方呢？依我看，职位来时，不能推却，职位去时，也不能阻止。得失不在于我，所以我并不感到难过。我有什么过人的地方呢？况且，我并不知道是宰相的职位尊贵，还是我尊贵。如果是宰相的职位尊贵，就与我无关。如果是我尊贵，就与宰相的职位无关。我心满意足。张目四看大自然的美丽，哪有闲情去理会人间的贵贱呢？”

Ups And Downs

“Though you were appointed Prime Minister three times, you weren’t vain.
