绝大多数人都为“背单字”所苦，背单字真的是很苦。但更糟糕的是，只要你在背单字，就注定你会“忘”单字！其实除了小学之外，单字根本不是用背的，你有没有看到美国人在背单字呢？背单字的量也是很有限的。单字其实是被pick进来的。你知道今年被列为全世界第四大的独裁者是谁吗？胡景涛。那胡景涛你有背过吗？没有嘛。其实所有的英文单字都像是“胡景涛”这三个字一样，Hu Chintou，一个字三个音节。

The Chinese parliament is expected to pass the bill on Monday, which would allow the 2.5-million-strong People’s Liberation Army to thwart any independence bid by Taiwan.

【译文】中国国会预期会在周一通过这项法案，允许250多万的人民解放军阻止任何台湾独立的企图。

【讲解】congress, parliament都是国会的意思，国会议员就是congressmen，也可以说是legislator、lawmaker，因为国会议员的职责就是立法与监督政府施政，一般地方议会的议员则称为councilor。美国的国会包括参众两院，参议院是Senate, 众议院是House of Representative。如果你在新闻标题上看到House，很多人都会以为是白宫White House的缩写，错了，House是众议院的意思。那么参议员是senator，众议员就叫representative。

Thwart是阻止的一个高阶用字，curb, hinder, inhibit, prohibit, thwart是新闻记者在写阻止时常用的几个字。
