1.Taiwan hails Rice’s defense comments
【中译】台湾欢迎莱斯的国防评论
【讲解】
“台湾当局对稻米进口采取防御措施。”？可不是！hail是新闻标题的常用字，等同welcome。Rice可不是稻米喔！而是全世界一人之下、万万人之上的美国国务卿莱斯女士。
莱斯这回在华盛顿被问到美国与台湾的立场或关系会如何影响到美国与北韩的会谈，特别是华盛顿会如何与北京蹉商，并且制定策略对平壤施压，以终止其核武计划。
She was asked how the US position or relationship with Taiwan affects US talks with North Korea, particularly how Washington negotiates with Beijing and formulates its strategy to pressure Pyongyang to terminate its nuclear weapons program.
这意思就是说，大家都在瞧，美国是否会为了北韩的问题，向中共低头，牺牲台湾的利益。但问答中，莱斯重申了美国会协防台湾的承诺。
The US secretary of state said that her country’s obligation to defend Taiwan was an integral part of its Asian policy.

2.South Korea moves to enforce UN sanctions

【讲解】
To enforce means to make people obey a law, or to make a particular situation happen or be accepted.
Enforce这个动词就是执行的意思，law enforcer就是执法者，law enforcement authority就是执法当局。

3.Chinese students riot after diplomas branded useless
【中译】在学历被贴上没有用的标签后，中国学生暴动
【讲解】
“中国学生沉湎在无用的名牌迷思中。”可不能这么理解，看到brand就把它当名牌了，不是的。至少这儿加上了ed，就不是名词了，而是动词，并且也不是过去式，而是过去分词，省略了were。原句写完整应该是：
Chinese students rioted after their diplomas were branded useless.
David老师在《如何阅读英文报纸的标题》中说过，标题经常用现在式来表达，使这个新闻看起来好像是现在发生的，但其实所有的新闻都至少是昨天的，而昨天已经过去了，所以到了第一段就会改成过去式。像这则新闻的第一段就是这么写的：
As many as 10,000 college students fought with Chinese police in four days of protests over their academic status, damaging cars and buildings and leaving at least 20 people injured, a foreign monitoring group said yesterday.
江西很多民办职业技术学院在招生时许诺颁发大专文凭，学生向教育局查证后，发现这些学院只能取得中专文凭，因此19日开始，引发近万名学生校园暴动，学生表示，只是希望学校能给予合理的答复，但没想到当局却出动武警暴力对待他们。据悉，除了赣江技术学院和江西服装学院，江西蓝天学院和城市学院也发生类似的暴动。

这一句可别翻成：“年轻人敦促军购法案尽速通过”！
American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Director Stephen Young yesterday urged the legislature to pass the arms procurement budgets by the end of this fall, noting that Taiwan should not continue to allow its security to be held hostage by partisan concerns.
美国在台协会主席杨甦隶，昨天敦促立法院，在今年秋天结束之前，通过武器采购预算；他提到台湾不应该持续允许台湾的安全，成了党派考量的人质。＠
