1.Taiwan hails Rice’s defense comments
【中譯】台灣歡迎萊斯的國防評論
【講解】
“台灣當局對稻米進口採取防禦措施。”？可不是！hail是新聞標題的常用字，等同welcome。Rice可不是稻米喔！而是全世界一人之下、萬萬人之上的美國國務卿萊斯女士。
萊斯這回在華盛頓被問到美國與台灣的立場或關係會如何影響到美國與北韓的會談，特別是華盛頓會如何與北京蹉商，並且制定策略對平壤施壓，以終止其核武計劃。
She was asked how the US position or relationship with Taiwan affects US talks with North Korea, particularly how Washington negotiates with Beijing and formulates its strategy to pressure Pyongyang to terminate its nuclear weapons program.
這意思就是說，大家都在瞧，美國是否會為了北韓的問題，向中共低頭，犧牲台灣的利益。但問答中，萊斯重申了美國會協防台灣的承諾。
The US secretary of state said that her country’s obligation to defend Taiwan was an integral part of its Asian policy.

2.South Korea moves to enforce UN sanctions
【中譯】南韓展開行動以執行聯合國的制裁
【講解】
To enforce means to make people obey a law, or to make a particular situation happen or be accepted.
Enforce這個動詞就是執行的意思，law enforcer就是執法者，law enforcement authority就是執法當局。

3.Chinese students riot after diplomas branded useless
【中譯】在學歷被貼上沒有用的標籤後，中國學生暴動
【講解】
“中國學生沉湎在無用的名牌迷思中。”可不能這麼理解，看到brand就把它當名牌了，不是的。至少這兒加上了ed，就不是名詞了，而是動詞，並且也不是過去式，而是過去分詞，省略了were。原句寫完整應該是：
Chinese students rioted after their diplomas were branded useless.
David老師在《如何閱讀英文報紙的標題》中說過，標題經常用現在式來表達，使這個新聞看起來好像是現在發生的，但其實所有的新聞都至少是昨天的，而昨天已經過去了，所以到了第一段就會改成過去式。像這則新聞的第一段就是這麼寫的：
As many as 10,000 college students fought with Chinese police in four days of protests over their academic status, damaging cars and buildings and leaving at least 20 people injured, a foreign monitoring group said yesterday.
江西很多民辦職業技術學院在招生時許諾頒發大專文憑，學生向教育局查證後，發現這些學院只能取得中專文憑，因此19日開始，引發近萬名學生校園暴動，學生表示，只是希望學校能給予合理的答覆，但沒想到當局卻出動武警暴力對待他們。據悉，除了贛江技術學院和江西服裝學院，江西藍天學院和城市學院也發生類似的暴動。

在新聞英語中，“計劃”的“類義字”有6個P, 和2個S。6個p就是plan, package, project, program, proposal, procedure。2個S就是scheme 和solution。

【講解】
這一句可別翻成：“年輕人敦促軍購法案盡速通過”！
American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Director Stephen Young yesterday urged the legislature to pass the arms procurement budgets by the end of this fall, noting that Taiwan should not continue to allow its security to be held hostage by partisan concerns.
美國在台協會主席楊甦隸，昨天敦促立法院，在今年秋天結束之前，通過武器採購預算；他提到台灣不應該持續允許台灣的安全，成了黨派考量的人質。＠
