英文諺語（三）

每一種語言都有傳遞其文化內涵和智慧的諺語，具有悠久歷史的中文自不必說，但西方的英語雖然歷史不長，卻同樣有很多諺語或歇後語，蘊含著生活的哲理和智慧。

　　

Time and tide wait for no one.

解釋：歲月唏噓不待人。

　　

一、Time活學活用：

　　

1、Time（名詞）：

　　

What time is it? 相信大家知道是問時間的句子。

　　

Do you have the time? 一定也是英語中常用來問時間的，告訴他幾點鐘就可以了。筆者有一位世伯在很多年前搭飛機，鄰座的西人用以上的方式問他時間，世伯不懂，便回答：「Oh, yes. I have plenty of time!」當然啦，在飛機上呆20多個小時，一定有plenty of time。哈哈！

　　

區別在於句子中是否有「the」，如果沒有「the」，意思便不同了。

　　

Do you have time？是問你有空嗎？而不是問時間。明白了嗎？

　　

What a time you have been! 你倒花了相當的時間在做某件事上。

　　

Now is your time! 現在是你的機會！指你有所作為的時候到了。

　　

He knows the time of day. 他甚麼都知道，指人甚麼都知道，不是糊塗人。

　　

At the time of the year, I would remember those young lives lost in that bloody night on the Square. 每年在這個時節，我便會想起那些失去的年輕生命，在那個血腥的黑夜，在廣場上……（作者指每年六四前後，Square第一個字母大寫表示那個廣場有代表性.。

　　

Behind the time：落在時代的後頭。

Behind time：指遲到，晚了。

On time：準時。

Take your time：慢慢來，不用急。

Hard or bad times：指不景氣，或社會不景氣、經濟不景氣。

Ancient times：古代。

　　

2、Time （動詞）

　　

The remark he made was not well timed.

指某人說話不合時宜。

　　

time one』s blow：伺機打擊他人。

time your work：對自己做的事有個時間預算。

　　

二、Tide （潮水） 活學活用：

　　

The tide is in （or down）：指現在是漲潮（退潮）。

　　

go with the tide：順從時勢。

　　

catch the tide：趁機（指做生意）。

　　

The tide turned to him. 形勢對他有利。（or against him. 指形勢不利於他。）
