美國習慣用語 第302講

我們上一次講了由penny也就是分幣組成的幾個習慣用語。美國人用的硬幣除了penny還有好幾種。例如，價值比penny高一點兒的有五分和一毛的硬幣。它們是:nickel and dime。不論Nickel還是dime都是零碎小錢，人們通常認為是瑣碎而無足輕重的。我們今天要學的第一個習慣用語正是nickel and dime。讓我們從下面這個例子來體會這個習慣用語的含義。
例句-1：Joe wanted to be his own boss but he had only enough money to open up a little newspaper stand. Just a nickel and dime business but he hopes it’s the start of something bigger.
他說：Joe 想要自己當老闆，但是他手頭的錢僅夠擺一個小報攤。雖然只是小本經營，但是他希望這是大買賣的起點。
可見nickel and dime意思就是「瑣碎而微不足道的」。

我們再學一個由dime這個詞組成的習慣用語: a dime a dozen。A dime a dozen 按照字面意思就是一毛錢一打。要是一樣東西化一毛錢就能買到一打的話，那必定是普通、廉價而且大量供應的物品了。好，讓我們聽個例子來確定a dime a dozen是甚麼意思。這個例子講的是廣告業，也就是: ad business。
例句-2：In the ad business good ideas are a dime a dozen. Everybody has them. What you look for is a man or woman who can take an idea and make it come alive in words and pictures.
他說：在廣告業中多的是好主意，簡直比比皆是、人皆有之。然而難得的卻是這樣的人才: 他採納一條主意，並能使它活靈活現於言語和圖像之中。
可見a dime a dozen是「容易得到的、比比皆是的」。

我們都知道在美金中價值最低的是penny， 分幣，但是你知道最小的硬幣是甚麼嗎?正是我們在講的dime。我們要學的習慣用語是on a dime。Dime是那麼個小不點兒，所以on a dime真是在一丁點兒的地方了。On a dime通常和動詞stop或者turn連用，意思是立刻停止，或者急轉彎。讓我們聽個例子，這段話講一種sports car。 Sports car是跑車。
例句-3：I wish I had the money to buy a sports car, one of those convertibles with good steering that lets you turn on a dime and good brakes that make you stop on a dime.
他說：但願我買得起一輛跑車，也就是那種敞篷車。它的轉向性能極佳，能讓你打小轉彎。它的剎車也特靈，能在即刻間剎住。
所以turn on a dime意思是打小轉彎，stop on a dime意思是立即剎住。

我們再來學一個習慣用語: get off the dime。Get off the dime常常用來敦促某人採取行動、當機立斷。讓我們來聽一個例子。這是一家企業的經理在打電話給另一家公司的人，催他對所提出的一項業務作出決斷。好，我們來聽他怎麼說，注意裡面用到的 get off the dime。
例句-4：Peter, I can’t wait any longer for you to decide whether you want to sign the contract. You have to get off the dime today – otherwise we’ll go to some other company.
他說：Peter， 我再也不能等你決定要不要簽那份合約了；你今天就得當機立斷，否則我們就找其它公司了。
所以get off the dime意思是不再遲疑、作出決斷。
