A Pretence Of Ignorance

Emperor Zhou was the last emperor of the Shang Dynasty. Because he was the most ruthless man under the sky, everyone dreaded him.

Emperor Zhou and his favourite officials loved to indulge themselves by partying day and night.

One time he forgot what day it was and asked his favourite officials, but they, too, had forgotten, so he sent a messenger to ask Ji Zi, his minister.

Ji Zi told his family in private, “If the emperor of a country doesn’t know what day it is, the country is in great danger. In the same way, if I know what the others don’t know, I’m also in serious trouble.”

So he sent word to the messenger, “Because I was drunk, I’ve also forgotten.”
