Souls Awakened

The following afternoon, a car drove into the Third Brigade. The guards were taking me to Guangzhou to see the doctor.

They had never taken me to the hospital or cared about my injuries since my leg was disabled. Now they might sense there was no hope of making me yield, thereby hoping to remove the proof of what they had done as quickly as possible.

The car drove out of the Third Brigade and reached the Chatou entrance three minutes later. From there, we would go down to the pier and get on board the ferry to Guangzhou.

The car pulled up in a corner by the entrance. Four guards got out of the car and looked into the pier —

Numerous guards, led by the Chatou chief, were standing straight at the pier, nervously awaiting the arrival of certain big shots.

That day, all the guards in the Third Brigade dressed formally and looked nervous. I knew from their talking that Chatou’s superiors were coming to “inspect the job” that day.

I sat in the car quietly looking at the dark mass of the guards at the pier, feeling great deep down: They had to report to their superiors that they had failed to accomplish the merciless order.
