Since the beginning of the Sino-US trade war, the United States has imposed a 10% tariff on many Chinese goods exported to US. In order to keep the rising costs under control, many US companies have either reduced trade volume with Chinese companies or gone to other countries for imports. Consequently, the business of many Chinese companies have fallen sharply. However, Toronto’s TriForest Flooring Inc. is an exception. Their US clients would rather bear the 10% tariff on their own and continue to import their flooring products from  China.

Why are the US clients remaining loyal to TriForest Flooring?  With this curiosity, recently I interviewed Mr. Zhang, CEO of TriForest Flooring. He shared with me, two secrets for keeping his clients loyal to his business.

First, keeping Chinese traditional essence as corporate culture.  Namely, willing to share the market instead of harshly competing.  Mr. Zhang believes that the accumulation of money is a process, just like the accumulation of knowledge. If you get rich overnight, you are likely abject for a night. Therefore, in the development of the enterprise, Mr. Zhang is always planning ahead to make proper strategies. He has long-term vision in operating the company. So his business is constant, in a solid and planned way. Mr. Zhang attributed his unique strategy to the study of classic books by Confucius.

He started reading these Chinese traditional books some 20 years ago. He believes those books are the essence of Chinese traditional culture, and they are all-inclusive. Therefore, when he founded the flooring company in China, he led the management team in reading one essay of them before going to work every morning.

Second, always keeping product quality top priority. Shenglang Wood Group is Mr. Zhang’s flooring production brand in China. It has long enjoyed a reputation for top quality and environmental safety in the industry. With CARB (California Air Resources Board) environmental certification, its formaldehyde content is far below industry standards. To guarantee a top quality product, Mr. Zhang keeps finance, production, and quality control all independent from each other.

With essence of Chinese culture heritage combined with modern management, Mr. Zhang’s business remains booming even when market seems sluggish to others.
