Souls Awakened

I quietly waited in the cell after finishing writing the testimony. When a guard finally came and took me to an office, it was already 11:50a.m.

The taking-notes 610 and one of the Labor Camp Bureau officials came into the office after me. They immediately turned on the ceiling electric fan and began smoking.

The whistling wind and the foul smell of cigarette instantly made me fainting.

I hastened to request them to turn off the fan and stop smoking. I couldn’t faint or not keep a clear head at such a critical moment.

“You are too demanding,” the 610 mumbled angrily; the Labor Camp Bureau official mumbled something unhappy as well. I looked sternly at them. They finally did as I requested.

Then the 610 took out a stack of material from his briefcase, “I’ve printed out the testimony you gave yesterday. Now you take a look at it and sign it.”

At this moment, from the window, I saw the Chatou chief chatting and laughing with the other 610 and Labor Camp Bureau official outside the office.

“Hurry up!” the chief called out to the two men in the office at times.

“Hurry! Hurry! You are too troublesome!” the Labor Camp Bureau official in the office snapped at me.

I asked the 610 in the office, how much time he would give me to read through the printed testimony.

“Half an hour is enough.”

“I can’t read through it in half an hour.”

“But we don’t have time anymore; we have to go to lunch!”

I looked him straight in the eye, “Then why did you come so late?!”

He avoided my eyes, “We… had something to do in the morning.”

“There are four of you. You all had something to do in the long morning?!”

He avoided my eyes and snapped, “I’ve truthfully recorded your testimony, so you don’t need to read it carefully. Just glance through it and sign it. Nothing to worry. Trust me.”

“No!”

Because I refused to give in, the two men had to decide to meet with me again after enjoying the lunch feast the Chatou chief treated them to.

Before they left, I handed them my seventeen pages of testimony.
