On Thursday, 45 people accused of transnational telecommunications fraud were repatriated from Indonesia to Beijing. They’re part of 828 suspects who have been apprehended, suspected of stealing a total of around $34 million in over 1,800 cases.

According to a statement released by China’s Ministry of Public Security, police cracked two large transnational telecom fraud groups on Wednesday. The bust was a joint effort from police in China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia and Singapore.

[Huang Zuyue, Criminal Investigation Bureau]:
“The suspects use this script to fake roles such as administrators, judges or police officers. In calls to victims, they try to cheat victims by making them believe they are involved in money laundering, drug trafficking or other criminal cases and then swindle large sum of the victims’ money and property.”

Networks are set up across the countries to cheat people of their money, and the majority of victims were Mainlanders and Taiwanese.

The investigation is still underway and police continue to pursue suspects.
