Pomelo/ink and color painting

There are many people who have eaten pomelos all their lives, but have never seen a pomelo tree. As for me, I’ve seen pomelo trees all my life, but had never painted a pomelo. That’s how the notion struck me to paint a pomelo tree.

During childhood, our textbooks stated that such and such countries in Southeast Asia produced teak, which is used to make furniture and boats, etc. Since the Chinese characters for “teak”—”youmu”—make it sound like teak is the wood of the pomelo tree, I wondered if there were really so many pomelo trees in those places. If so, everyone would be fortunate enough to eat pomelos practically every day. I continued to wonder if teak wasn’t just the wood of the pomelo tree. But going by the pomelo trees that I had known during childhood, the wood seemed way too inferior to be used to make furniture.

This painting places the pomelo tree “subject” in the center-left of the picture. The “object” has been placed on the right side, which gives the painting a sense of balance. The central “bridging section” features two small flying parrots, which serve the same function as a transition in music. @
