Jayant Patel, who goes by the nickname “Doctor Death,” appeared at a Brisbane, Australia court for his sentencing on Thursday. He has been sentenced for seven years behind bars, but will be eligible for parole after three-and-a-half-years.

Patel pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of three of his patients, and to causing bodily harm to another patient during his time working as a surgeon at Queensland’s Bundaberg Hospital between 2003 and 2005.

Patel’s lawyers say a four to five-year jail sentence was likely to happen, given Patel’s lack of criminal history.

But some say he deserves more jail time.

“Not enough. It should have been 21 years for each of the manslaughters and another 7 for what he’s done to Ian Vowles.”

Prosecutors asked the judge to sentence Patel for more than 10 years.

The judge denounced Patel’s repeated serious disregard for the welfare of his patients, and said that he deserved to be punished as a criminal.
法官譴責帕特爾一再嚴重忽視他病人的福利，並說把他當罪犯懲處是應該的。
Late on Thursday, Patel was driven from the courts to the correctional center where he will begin serving his sentence.
週四稍晚，帕特爾從法庭被載送到矯治中心，他將在那裡開始服刑。
