Papua New Guinea has become a fashion centre. Miss Traditional Papua New Guinea is a fashion show that embraces the simple life.
巴布新內亞已經成了時尚中心。傳統巴布新幾內亞小姐選拔是一項擁抱簡單生活的時尚秀。
There are five contestants, lots of people and fancy costumes. No it’s not Indonesian Idol, but a fashion show organized by the Red Cross.

The dress is worn when men return from long trading expeditions. Painted tattoos symbolise hardship and tears of joy, while banana seed beads count how long the men were away.
這套衣服是當男人從遠地交易遠征回來時。彩繪的紋身象徵著苦難與喜悅的淚水，而用香蕉種子作成珠子的數目，代表著男人遠征到多遠的地方。
The impact of modernisation brings daily change for Papua New Guinea but ancient rites are still performed for important social events.

Pall has embraced her culture and says she would love to win the contest. Contestant Michelle Pall: “Yes, I would be very much excited and head over heels if I win the “Miss Traditional” because I really love my Papuan New Guinean culture.”

Shirley O’Connor, administration officer for a motor company is representing Lalaura village. Her painted tattoos represent the centipede and millipede, family tribal symbols.

O’Connor’s elaborate headdress is fashioned from white and black cockatoo feathers, and wouldn’t you know it, her arm shells used to be the currency.

She said: “If mothers and fathers are coming here, then they should go back to their children and tell them that they should still hold onto their traditions and cultures because it’s our identity and something to be proud of.”
她說： 「假如母親們與父親們來到這裡話，那麼他們將會回去告訴他們的孩子，他們仍然應該掌握他們的傳統與文化，因為它是我們的認同，是值得驕傲的東西。」
There are over 200 cultural traditions in the South Pacific nation of 5.4 million people. But western culture and television is blamed for corrupting vibrant traditions.

Gima Kila, Papua New Guinea Red Cross: “a lot of our cultures are disappearing. Papua New Guinea has more than 750 languages and language is culture. If we don’t maintain cultures and these languages then they will disappear.”
