While gold prices have risen, it has lost much of its glitter to diamonds in India. Though considered something of a lucky charm to Hindu families in India, gold prices have shot through roof. It comes at a time when diamond prices are falling sharply in the southern Indian city of Chennai.

"The impact is more on the jewelry industry rather than the diamond industry because diamond somehow… because of the high gold price, people who want to buy gold jewelry, they are now buying diamond jewelry."

Diamonds have increasingly occupied the space traditionally meant for gold in homes, religious functions and marriages.

"The pricing that you have for stones right now is steep. It's truly worth it because a 20 to 30 percent skid on solitaire diamond is a lot. A stone that cost five lakh one and half months back is now three and half lakh i.e. one and half lakh discount on stone and I think that is truly worth it because the fact that once the economic meltdown is over then the rates are going to go back up. So it's a fabulous investment."
买钻石的Lakshmi女士：
“现在钻石的价格陡落，单颗钻石价格下滑20%~30%确实很划算。ㄧ个月前要价50万卢比的钻石现在只需要35万卢比，相当于15万卢比的折扣。我认为真的很值得，因为一旦经济萧条结束，钻石价格就会回升，所以这是很棒的投资。”
