An investigation into last month’s fire at a building owned by China’s state-run television station CCTV is turning up some questionable financial deals.

Caijing Magazine reports that Xu Wei, who was in charge of the building’s construction, received almost $12,000 in commissions for the illegal fireworks show that started the fire.

The money used for the fireworks display—and several other CCTV projects—was also funneled through a company owned by five of Xu’s close friends.

Xu was arrested shortly after the fire. State media reported that he had ordered the fireworks display.
