According to US oil giant ConocoPhillips, the Bohai Bay oil spill in north-east China may be much bigger than initially thought. The company is partly responsible forthe leak that took place in early June. It’s a recent discovery after authorities ordered ConocoPhillips to clean up the seabed by Sunday.

ConocoPhillips said during the clean-up effort, they had discovered (quote) “additional oil-based drilling mud on the sea floor.” It pushes up the previous estimate of 1,500 barrels of oil that’s leaked into the ocean.

According to China’s State Oceanic Administration, or SOA, the spill has polluted 460 square miles. However, there is conflicting reports the affected area is more than triple that figure.

The SOA has ordered ConocoPhillips to finish the cleanup by Sunday, a deadline the company is still hoping to make.
