poker face
玩扑克牌是美國人的一种傳統性消遣。最普遍的一种扑克牌游戲就叫poker。中文里的「扑克牌」也許就是從poker這個游戲的名字得來的。玩poker這种游戲需要有技巧，還要碰運气，另外你還得有點冒險精神。由于poker在美國人當中十分流行，因此有許多牌桌上的說法也就逐漸地成了人們日常的用語了。今天我們要介紹兩個和poker這個游戲有關的詞匯。
第一個是 poker face。Poker face的意思就是臉上毫無表情，不露聲色。這對于玩牌的人來說是很重要的，因為每個人都想猜測誰手里的牌好，誰手里的牌次。可是，要是你擺出一付poker face的話，誰也猜不出究竟你手里的牌怎么樣。
我們來舉一個例子，看看poker face在日常生活中的用法。例如，你的同事對你說：
例句-1：”I never know whether my boss likes my work or not — he is a real poker face!”
他說：“我從來也不知道我的老板到底喜不喜歡我的工作。他臉上可真是一點表情都沒有。”
還有的人去看牙大夫的時候心里非常緊張，可是臉上卻裝得若無其事。下面這個人說的也是同樣的情況：
例句-2：”I tried to keep a poker face even though I was scared to death when I went back to my doctor to hear the results of my lab tests. But I admit I gave him the biggest smile of my life when he told me the tests were negative and there was nothing wrong with me.”
他說：“當我去醫生那里去看試驗結果的時候，我害怕得要死。可是我盡量裝得若無其事。不過，當大夫告訴我化驗結果是陰性、我沒有問題的時候，我對他笑了，我大概一輩子也沒有笑得那么高興的。”
玩牌的時候臉上不露表情的人往往都很謹慎，把牌放在靠胸口的地方，免得給別人偷看。這在英文里就是 close to the vest。Close to the vest用在一般情況下就是指一個人非常小心不讓別人知道他在干什么。
我們先來听听一位記者的講話：
例句-3：”Two other governors have already announced that they will run for president in the next election but the governor of our state is still keeping his plans close to his vest — nobody is sure what he will do.”
這是說：“另外又有兩位州長宣布他們決定參加下一屆的總統競選。可是我們的州長還是對他的計划保密，誰也不知道他究竟參不參加。”
下面一個例子是一個大公司的總裁在告訴一位同事一個机密的消息，但是要他不要說出去：
例句-4：”John, keep this close to your vest but I want to tell you our company is going to merge with a big New York Corporation — they’ll announce it sometime next week.”
他說：“約翰，我要告訴你，我們的公司要和紐約的一家大公司合并了，他們下星期內就要宣布。不過你知道就行了，不要往外說。”
