China's Spring Festival travel season began on Sunday, pushing the limits of the country's public transport system.

Hundreds of millions of people working and studying away from their hometowns are returning home to reunite with family members.

The rush began 15 days ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year, and is expected to last until the middle of February.

Nearly 3.2 billion passenger trips are expected during this year's Spring Festival season, a nine percent increase over last year. Given that China's population is around 1.3 billion, these numbers indicate that nearly everyone in the country will travel twice.

It is estimated that around 2.8 billion trips will be made by bus, which accounts for roughly 90 percent of the total number of passenger trips.

To cope with the rising demand, 840 thousand buses are now running on roads, with over 2.6 million departures every day.

The station expects over 20 thousand passengers a day, as it gets closer to Lunar New Year's Eve, just 15 days away.
预计农历新年除夕前的15日,每天都会有2万多名旅客涌向车站。
