Basketball superstar Michael Jordan turns to a court of a different kind on Tuesday… filing a lawsuit. The case is against Chinese sportswear company Qiaodan for misusing his name.

In Chinese, Jordan’s name translates to Qiaodan. And the company, Qiaodan Sports, was accused of using not only his name, but also his jersey number, and has even attempted to use the names of his children, according to Jordan.
在中国，Jordan的名字译为乔丹。乔丹体育用品公司被指控不只利用他的名字，还有球衣号码，据Jordan表示，甚至试图利用他小孩的名字。

It’s speculated the name Qiaodan helped the company with its success.

However, some local Chinese believe that the name of the company isn’t a big issue.

“I don’t think China’s Qiaodan brand infringes on Michael Jordan’s name. I feel they are using a name and their logo is different from the Jordan logo featured by Nike. If it is just about the name, there are many people called Jordan. So if it is just the name, it should not be an infringement of his rights.”
上海居民沈振宇说：
“我不认为中国乔丹品牌侵犯Michael Jordan的名字。我觉得他们正在使用一个名字，且他们的商标跟以Jordan商标作为特色的Nike公司不同。如果这仅是个名字，有许多人叫做Jordan。所以，如果它仅是个名字，不应会侵犯他的权利。”

The basketball legend hopes this case will clear up any confusion amongst Chinese consumers.

“I have special bonds with Chinese fans. They have been to Chicago to support me when I played for the Bulls. I have been to China. They were very supportive of me when I was there so I feel it’s important for me to make sure they are not misled by this Chinese company.”

A Qiaodan spokesperson said no comment could be made on the case, but in past, the company has stated that its name has nothing to do with Michael Jordan.
