Titleless/ink and color painting
When I talked with my students about the “shadow” issue of ink and wash paintings, I emphasized that almost all ancient painters were officials, literati or their wives and concubines. These people are not professional painters, drawing in their minds is just like a kind of “hoppy developing” only. So, neither emphasis on sketch nor shadow concept demand. All drawing objects are “writing idea of mind”, so it is not surprising not to draw a shadow.
In fact, the ancients pay more attention on their personal accomplishment and character. Those who are considered as cultivation and noble character, their paintings are more savor and style. Some painters draw palace and pavilions, neat and parallel lines paintings, are considered as triteness in artistic, not worth mentioning.
This is the taste of the literati painting.@
