STORY: The Vatican activated a new solar energy system on Wednesday, November 26 and announced an ambitious idea that could some day make it an alternative energy exporter.

The massive sweeping wavy roof of the “Nervi Hall” has been covered with 2,400 photovoltaic panels to provide energy for lighting, heat and air conditioning. The system on the 5,000 square meter roof will produce 300 kilowatt hours of clean energy a year for the audience hall and surrounding buildings. Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, the governor of Vatican City, says they won’t stop at that.

The Nervi Hall project will cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 225 tons and save the equivalent of 80 tons of oil each year. The Santa Maria di Galleria project would make the Vatican an exporter of alternative energy. Officials say the Vatican plans to install enough renewable energy sources to provide 20 percent of its needs by 2020, broadly in line with a proposal by the European Union.
諾維廳計畫將會減低大約225噸的二氧化碳排放量，每年可節省相當於八十噸的石油。加勒里亞計畫可能讓梵蒂岡成為替代能源的輸出國。官方表示，梵蒂岡打算在2020年前設置足夠的再生能源設備，提供其所需的20％使用，以符合歐盟的要求。
