Rock sculptor Vicente Ajero is turning volcanic materials into sculptures depicting popular images.

Ajero uses lava from the Mayon Volcano washed away by the rains down the slopes and to nearby towns.

“I can’t say that I’m happy about the volcano erupting. The lava is dangerous. But these are the materials that I need to create my art works.”

It’s been nine years since Ajero began his volcano-inspired craft.

Ajero exhibits his art works in a small shop near the Mayon Volcano.

His souvenir items are worth $2 to $11 U.S. dollars and his large sculptures sell for up to $320 U.S. dollars. He caters to foreign and local tourists as well as business establishments.
